Wedding First Dance Guide

Whether you’re booking a band or only having a DJ (but a band is best, right? 🙂 ) there’s a lot to think about, plan rehearse and sort when it comes to choosing the song for your first dance.

Choose something you know

This sounds obvious, but the song really should be a song you know well and that means something to you and your partner, and if you love it, you’ll make it the perfect song to dance to.

Which version?….

So, as we all know, there are many versions of songs out there.  You may have heard an amazing acoustic version on the song you want, but if you don’t specify the exact arrangement with your band or DJ you could easily be dancing to the wrong speed or style of song.

This is especially important when you’re using a band, as they will arrange and play a specific arrangement, so it’s hard to change – with a DJ, if needed, if they have the wrong version and this is known even 10 minutes before, they can easily download the right version.  We recommend providing either a YouTube, Spotify or iTunes URL for the version you want the band to play.  This will avoid any doubt and make it perfect for your big day.

Learn with a Pro and pass on any unique steps

It’s quite self-explanatory that it’s best to learn and have choreography with a professional choreographer.  It’s also likely that they want to add in a few special touches/stops/moves to make the dance more dramatic, so if they do, ask them to contact your band to explain, as it may be that the band can add something (accents, stops, nice chord progressions) which are not part of the original recording, but help compliment the moves that they are teaching you.  And when it all comes together, it will be amazing!

Do a practice run

You may not be able to do this with the band, but they may be able to either provide a musician (keyboard, guitar etc) to play through the band arrangement while you dance, or where they have written a notated arrangement, they may be able to provide a recording of the arrangement played by software instruments.  This at least gives you the exact format of the song, and allows you to practice as much as you need.
